How it Works

REGULAR AIR PURIFIERS

  • Use HEPA filters that catch only a small percentage of contaminants.
  • HEPA filters do not remove gases like volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or the gaseous products of smoke.
  • Captured particles can be re-released once filters become saturated with pollutants.
  • Activated carbon is sometimes used to capture select gases but it has limited efficiency, may re-emit toxins, and requires huge quantities (many pounds) to produce a meaningful decrease in gaseous pollutants.
  • Both HEPA and activated carbon filters require regular replacement every few weeks or months depending on pollutant levels.


BIOM ALPHA ADVANTAGE

Principal of Natural Filtration:

  • Utilizes moss that hosts a rich community of microbes similar to a forest floor (the "moss microbiome").
  • These microbes are like nature's recycling system – they break down almost any pollutant into harmless compounds, like water, CO2, and moss nutrients.
  • By blowing air past these microbes, we can use them as a filter or "biofilter".
  • The biofilter's efficiency improves over time as the microbial community adapts to local pollutants.


Biofiltration Process:

1. Filtration:

  • Capture: Air passes upward through high-surface-area moss disks which are optimized for physically capturing gaseous and solid contaminates.
  • Break Down: Over 100,000 species of microorganisms break down toxic particles and gases.
  • Recycle: The molecular by-products of this microbial activity are used by both the moss and the microbes for energy and nutrients.

2. Photosynthesis:

  • Under high-power LED grow lights, the moss performs photosynthesis.
  • This process absorbs CO2 and releases oxygen, freshening your space.
  • Because of moss's tiny size, we can pack a lot of it into a small device. This allows each BIOM Alpha to act like a "rebreather" for indoor air.


Bio-Mechanical Filtration:

  • A final stage of conventional HEPA and activated carbon filters near the fan ensures ultra-clean output.
  • Because these filters are located at the end of the air stream (after moss biofiltration), they do not rapidly saturate with pollutants.
  • In this way, we are using nature and technology synergistically to deliver to best possible air output.

MAINTENANCE

Monthly:

  • Refill 7-gallon water tank using standard 5-gallon water cooler jug.
  • Or go into "water saving mode" to extend a single tank over 3 months.

Yearly:

  • Replace the clear moss tube after the moss disks outgrow their housing. We have designed this to be plug and play.
